Seafood and Gastronomy Fair (Feria del Marisco)
An open-air seafood fair serving thousands of kilos of fresh fish and shellfish straight from the local fishing fleet with no middlemen - cuttlefish, anchovies, shrimp fritters, prawns, scampi and garlic tuna on toast - at affordable prices. Live music from local performers each night creates a relaxed, festive evening out.
Isla Cristina is a working fishing town, and this fair is basically the catch of the day cooked and served on grass under the trees of the Parque Central. The trawlers land it, the stalls cook it, and there's no freezer in between - the locals are quietly proud of that. You'll find cuttlefish, anchovies, fat prawns and langoustines, shrimp fritters, and garlic tuna piled onto toast, all sold by the dish at sensible prices.
Things get going late, around nine in the evening, which is the sensible Andalusian way once the heat drops. A few local singers take turns through the night, so it's the sort of relaxed, family evening where you eat slowly, order another plate, and let the kids run about on the lawn. It runs over a few days each summer, usually around the turn of August.
