St. John's Night (San Juan) Bonfires & Fireworks on Las Canteras Beach
On the night of 23-24 June thousands gather on the city beach of Las Canteras for symbolic bonfires, a traditional midnight dip in the sea for good luck, and a fireworks display over the bay launched from La Cícer. One of the city's most atmospheric free nights of the summer.
This is the night Las Palmas marks its founding, and the whole city seems to drift down to the sand for it. From around 11.30pm the concerts kick off at the Plaza de la Música, and the crowd thickens as midnight nears. The tradition is to wade into the sea at twelve for a bit of luck, light a small fire, and write down something you'd rather leave behind before letting it burn. Bring a towel if you fancy the dip, because plenty do.
The fireworks go up over the bay from the La Cícer end and you'll see them clearly from most of the promenade. It's free, it's busy, and it runs well into the small hours. Get there early to claim a patch of sand, pack a few drinks and snacks, and settle in. Public transport and taxis get stretched late on, so plan your way home.
