Mallorca's Midsummer night — bonfires, correfoc fire-runs and concerts by the sea in Palma and across the island.
The Nit de Sant Joan, on 23 June, is Mallorca's great Midsummer celebration and one of the liveliest nights of the island's year. In Palma the focus is the Parc de la Mar, below the cathedral, where bonfires are lit, bands play and a correfoc — a "fire-run" of costumed devils and firework-spitting dragons — winds through the crowd. Beaches around the island fill with smaller bonfires and parties that run until dawn.
What to expect. A warm, communal, slightly anarchic night out. Tradition says you should jump the bonfire flames or take a midnight dip in the sea for luck. In Palma, expect free concerts, food stalls and big crowds; in the resorts and villages, more low-key beach gatherings.
Practical bit. Central Palma is walkable and the old town is the place to be, but it gets very busy — leave the car on the outskirts. If you're staying out in Alcúdia, Pollença or the south, your own resort will likely hold its own beach celebration. A hire car gives you the choice of joining the big Palma party or a quieter local one.
It's free, it's atmospheric, and it marks the real start of the Mallorcan summer.
