Guided Tour of the Teatre Principal de Maó (in English)
An English-language guided tour of Spain's oldest opera house, taking you through the vestibule, main auditorium, the Queen's Room and the gallery. You'll hear historical anecdotes spanning nearly two centuries of the theatre's heritage.
Opened in 1829, this is the oldest opera house in Spain, and the tour walks you through the parts most visitors never see. You'll cross the vestibule, stand in the main auditorium under the horseshoe of boxes, look in on the so-called Queen's Room, and climb up to the gallery the locals call the "Galliner" — the henhouse, the cheap seats right at the top. The guide fills the hour with anecdotes from nearly two centuries of performances, and you come away with an updated brochure showing the floor plan and the building's history.
It's an easy hour out of the Maó heat, and it runs in English, so you won't be straining to follow along in Catalan. Tickets start at four euros, which is hard to argue with. Worth booking ahead, as the slots are limited.
