Major Festivals of the Holy Christ of Peace
The town's biggest fiesta, declared of Provincial Tourist Interest, runs 12-16 September around the main day on 14 September. Expect noon mascletas (firecracker displays), a flower-and-fruit offering, processions, costume parades and a closing fireworks castle - all free and easy to enjoy without Spanish.
For five days each September, this quiet town just north of Alicante goes all in. It opens on the 12th with the peñas, the neighbourhood social clubs, pouring into the streets, and from there the days settle into a rhythm. The midday mascletàs are the thing to catch first: not pretty fireworks but a wall of percussive bangs you feel in your chest as much as hear. The 14th is the main day, when High Mass gives way to the big procession with the image of the Holy Christ of Peace and a monumental fireworks display after dark.
The flower and fruit offering banks up colour earlier in the week, and the closing days bring costume parades, a children's contest and a procession of decorated floats before the final fireworks castle. It's all free, and you don't need a word of Spanish to follow the noise.
