Sant Joan Midsummer Eve Celebration
Roses celebrates Catalonia's biggest midsummer night on the seafront with the arrival of the Flama del Canigo flame, a giants parade, a bonfire and fireworks over the bay. This year a beach DJ session is added at Perola beach, so the party runs late into the warm June night.
The shortest night of the year is when Catalonia really lets its hair down, and Roses does it right on the seafront. Things kick off around 10pm by the Monument al Pescador, when the Flama del Canigó arrives. This is a flame carried down from the mountain of the same name, and locals use it to light the foguera, the big midsummer bonfire on the beach. Expect the gegants, those towering papier-mache giants, to parade through before fireworks go up over the bay.
What's new this year is a DJ set down at Perola beach, so once the formal bits wind down the party keeps going into the small hours. It's free, it's loud and it's properly local. Bring something to sit on and a slice of coca if you can find one.
