Pilgrimage of the Virgin of La Peña (Romería de la Virgen de la Peña)
Fuerteventura's most important religious pilgrimage, in honour of the island's patron saint, draws devotees who walk or ride donkeys and camels to the hamlet of Vega de Río Palmas. Expect masses and processions alongside folk dances, decorated ox-carts, live music and food stalls.
Every September, Fuerteventura turns out for its patron saint, and the whole island seems to head for the little hamlet of Vega de Río Palmas in the hills above Betancuria. Pilgrims arrive on foot, others on donkeys or camels, many in their Sunday best, converging on the small church for masses and the procession of the Virgin. It's a genuine act of devotion rather than a show put on for visitors, which is part of the appeal.
Around the religious side runs a proper island fiesta: folk dances, decorated ox-carts trundling through, live music and stalls handing out local food to taste. It's free, family-friendly and the third Saturday of the month is the day to aim for. Come early and be ready for crowds and tight parking on the mountain roads.
