Battle of Lepanto Historical Reenactment
A costumed open-air staging of the 16th-century naval Battle of Lepanto, a long-standing village tradition in Barlovento. The spectacle itself is free to watch; townsfolk in period dress recreate the famous Christian-Ottoman sea battle.
Barlovento, up on the green northern shoulder of La Palma, marks each summer by refighting a sea battle from 1571. The whole village pitches in. Townsfolk in period dress take the Christian and Ottoman sides, signing up months ahead, and the clash plays out in the town centre rather than out on the water, so you watch it all at close range.
It runs annually, with the 2026 staging set for Sunday 9 August. Watching costs nothing. The real draw is seeing a small mountain town throw itself into a tradition it clearly enjoys. Time it with a wander round Barlovento, grab a drink in the square, and stay for the noise and theatre of the fight itself.
