Festa de la Flama (Flame Festival) - Sant Joan Eve
A traditional midsummer flame festival on the eve of Sant Joan. Festivities start in the village square from 5:30pm, then move up to the historic Castell d'Alaró at 8pm for a torch-lighting ceremony, music and dancing.
Sant Joan eve is when much of Spain lights bonfires to mark midsummer, and Alaró does it with a lovely twist. Things kick off in the Plaça Sebastià Jaume around half five, all gentle village build-up. Then, at eight, the crowd makes its way up to the Castell d'Alaró, the ruined castle that sits high on its crag above the town, for the lighting of the torch and a bit of the old jumping ritual.
After that it's music and dancing into the late evening. It's a local affair rather than a tourist set-piece, which is rather the point. Wear proper shoes if you mean to follow the procession up the hill, bring a layer for when the air cools, and let the fire and the singing do the rest. Free to attend.
