Romeria de San Miguel (Pilgrimage Fiesta)
The colourful highlight of San Miguel's patron-saint festivities: decorated ox-drawn carts wind through the old town with folk music, traditional Canarian costume, and stalls handing out local food and wine. A lively, easy-to-enjoy slice of southern-Tenerife village tradition.
A romeria is a country pilgrimage with a party attached, and San Miguel's is one of the friendlier ones in southern Tenerife. Decorated carts creak through the old town, folk groups play as they go, and most of the village turns out in traditional Canarian dress, neighbours and visitors walking the route together.
The real draw is the food. Canarian dishes and local wine come off the carts and get handed straight to whoever's passing, no ticket and no plan needed. It's the central act of the San Miguel Arcangel patron-saint fiestas, usually held in the second half of September, around the 21st, so check the village dates before you set off. Wear decent shoes, the streets are steep, and turn up hungry.
